• Raw or is it RAW ?

From Dennis Scott@VERT to All on Sun Mar 12 13:24:24 2023
    Hello to All,

I have a tiny little question that's related to something I saw earlier on Diamond Mine BBS. While doing my normal things on there, a message popped up on the screen that said "so and so logged on using "RAW". I looked and mine said Telnet (as it should be), but what is "RAW"?

    Thanks,
    Dennis

    Hi Dennis,

In the context of using a BBS, "RAW" typically refers to a method of connecting to the BBS over a raw TCP socket, rather than using a telnet client. This could be done using specialized software or by issuing raw socket commands from a command line tool like Telnet or PuTTY.

While raw connections may offer more flexibility than telnet in some cases, they can also be more prone to errors or security issues. Therefore, most BBSes predominantly rely on telnet connections as their primary connection method.

I hope this helps answer your question! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Raw TCP, not Telnet, not RLogin, just plain ole TCP.

Raw TCP, not Telnet, not RLogin, just plain ole TCP.

So Raw probably means that person is on the same local TCIP network as the BBS, ie, a local user?

    Thanks,

No, not at all. More likely the user is just using some retro hardware or software that doesn't support Telnet.

What type of retro hardware could that be? Sorry, I'm just trying to learn here and I can't find anywhere online that tells of such things.

The BBS is connected to a switch connected to a router connected to the internet. So what hardware/software would allow passage of TCP thru all of that without using telnet via TCPIP.

    Thanks,
    Dennis

Oh, like a Commodore or Apple or Atari computer.

Anything that passes Telnet traffic through will pass raw TCP too, in fact they're often confused with each other. Telnet is only barely any different from raw TCP.

Syncterm allows you to specify RAW as a connection type to call a telnet
BBS with. I always suggest that people try RAW, if their terminal client supports it, when calling my older DOS BBS. Otherwise, they may run into issues with double carriage returns and/or on file transfers.

I see that now and matter of fact, I'm using Raw in this session and it seems to work just as well as Telnet.

    Thanks,

Telnet (as it should be), but what is "RAW"?

Not sure if anyone else has said this, but telnet has a negotiation handshake type of thing that happens when you connect. It tries to establish screen size, terminal speed, and several other conditions. Raw connection is just that, a raw TCP connection with no negotiation or handshake happening on connect.
