Yeah, I hear ya. It would be nice if we could just step into a time machine and go back and visit the hay-day of the BBS era. :-) It is kind of happening with BBS's coming back online that have been dark for so many years, so that is something to be grateful for. :-)
I don't any of my computers even HAVE modems anymore. I know my laptop doesn't, I just double checked.

I dunno? BBS's have never left me. The only the that's changed is I don't use a dialup modem anymore. ;-)

That one pisses me out. Just because a domain exist it does not mean a web server is hosted there. That is what you can have multiple hosts in a domain, so you can have mail.operationalsecurity.es for mails, and www.operationalsecurity.es for web, for example.

Sure. But wouldn't it make sense for the shorted form (e.g. operationalsecurity.es) to point to the server of most use/typing (e.g. the server)?

An apache re-write rule should take care of that without another server stanza.
I use Dreamhost for my blog and a couple of other sites, and one of the options that have is how you want www.domain.tld and domain.tld. I usually tell them to strip the www and redirect to domain.tld, I presume that a rewrite is how they do it.
